it was amazing
bookshelves: horror

What a great and disturbing read. You'll follow father and son walking cross country to the sea in an post apocalyptic world. Fellow human beings are hostile (there is a distinction between good and bad guys but you'll only find the bad or indifferent ones). God is gone. Our two characters live day by day trying to survive. No positive outlook, rain and cold block their progress. Human race is almost extinct. The dialogues between father and son are short, like their daily portions of food. How will this grim tale end? I won't tell but couldn't put this depressing but enthralling novel down. You don't want to walk a mile in the shoes of the main characters. Prose, language and style are masterly. To me definitely a candidate worth for the Nobel Prize. Highly recommended!

Baba Nice review Peter. This book fully realises a post apocalyptic reality and holds nothing back!

Peter Baba wrote: "Nice review Peter. This book fully realises a post apocalyptic reality and holds nothing back!"

Hi Baba, thanks for your comment. Fully agree with you. What a depressing world, what a barren wasteland devoid of humanity. This was an extremely dark vision of a future I don't want to live in... all the best Peter

Peter John wrote: "I read this so long ago. Seems important enough to revisit. Good review!"

Hi John, I only wanted to read a few pages but couldn't put that book down. A masterpiece with lasting impact. Hope we don't walk down that path the author writes about... thank you very much. Well, I think it's worth a re-reading. All the best Peter

Steve Seen the film and that was superb nice review may have to pick this up

Gianfranco Mancini Hi, Peter. Great review. Loved this one me too when I've read it years ago. McCarthy's Blood Meridian is another disturbing masterpiece but with a western setting. Give it a try if you haven't read it, I bet you are going to love it 🤗

Hi Gianfranco, thank you very much for your comment. McCarthy was on my reading list for years. I started with The Road and will definitely more from this great author. What a prose. I'm deeply impressed. Thanks for pointing Blood Meridian out. All his books sound extremely interesting. All the best Peter

SAM Definitely not for the faint of heart and definitely a depressing read. HOWEVER, it is so masterfully written you feel like you are walking on the road with them and experiencing the same horrors. I may have to revisit my rating for this book as I read it so long ago, but have thought about it many times over the years and feel exactly how I felt when I first read it and how I felt when I finished it.

Hi Farrah, I can highly recommend this book. The author means serious business and created a dark classic. You shouldn't miss it. All the best Peter

Hi Sam, thanks for your wonderful comment. Absolutely true. The power of the prose takes you away. Normally I shun postapocalyptic stories but I couldn't put this one away. Brilliant prose and serious philosophical issues. All the best Peter

Cecily Nice review, and yes, "God is gone", but there is something liturgical in some of the exchanges between man and boy.

Hi Cecily, thanks for your comment. Good point. Sometimes the story reminded me on parables in the Bible. Religion is deeply hidden in the action of the characters cleverly hidden in the defunct wasteland described. A very interesting book indeed. All the best Peter

Zoeytron Your review was right on task, Peter.

Carol Fantastic review, Peter! "Depressing but enthralling novel" is a perfect description.

Oh, wow, thanks a lot for your comment, Sue. Me too. It was very grim but I couldn't put it down. Let's hope we'll never end up in a situation as described in the novel. All the best Peter
